It's helped reunite grannies and grandpas with their estranged grandchildren all across the country.
Now the 66-year-old, from Glasgow, has joined the Scottish Senior Citizens Unity Party to represent pensioners, grandparents and families, and the disabled in parliament.
He's standing for the first time as an MSP for the Glasgow region.
But he will still have to pull off a minor miracle if he's any chance of beating high-profile rivals, including Celebrity Big Brother star and political firebrand Galloway and The Green Party's media darling Patrick Harvie.
The grandfather of six said: "It's tough when you aren't well known. I was campaigning at Silverburn shopping centre recently and there was a lot of interest in what I had to say.
"You've got to keep trying your best to put your point across and hope the electorate finally take notice."
